First, let me say, this piece is a great depiction of the artist, who essentially, is a creator of their own universe. Every piece we see is a glimpse into their world. Hence, why this piece was given 5 stars on Vision: the theme here is quite blatant, and thoroughly represented throughout the entire piece. The artists creates their own universe, with their own tools. Just as how Karolus created this piece using his own knowledge and experience with the digital medium.

I gave "Spray Your Universe" four stars on originality, because I feel that this breaks from the usual surrealism that Karolus usually depicts. Also spray-paint artists aren't usually represented in the best of light, let alone as a representation of a creator. Usually when you see the artist as a creator, they are holding a paint brush, or a pencil. Depictions of spray paint artists are usually used in more urban settings, but this casts a different shadow, which is refreshing.

I awarded four stars on technique, because this piece clearly demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the medium used, and an understanding of how things in a similar environment fit together. The lighting is accurately represented (though I think the blue light on the right shoulder is a bit too strong), despite the wild environment, which also helps us believe that these elements do belong together in this universe. It also creates a sense of depth, rather than having this person just spraying something on the wall. The texture below the erupting yellow spiral also creates the sense of a foreground, and the lack of texture in the purple creation puts it further into the background. The contrast of the complementary yellow and purple colors as well as the diagonal direction of the spray all direct our eye towards the artist's newest creation. The purple galaxy/vortex pulls you in, and makes you want to see what will happen next. The only thing I disagree with, though this is more surrealistic and could easily be the artist's choice, is how bright the stars are along the edges of the yellow spiral. Since this part is glowing so strongly, I felt that would block out a few more stars, even though some of the edges do recede into darkness. The same goes for the sun in the upper right corner.

I gave four stars for impact, because "Spray Your Universe" does have a strong theme and narrative, and the bizarre depiction makes you stop and look for a moment, rather than just passing by the piece. It does evoke serious thought about the artist's role as a creator. You're not just someone who makes pretty pictures, you are a builder of a world that people (including yourself) can indulge in, and be inspired by. Overall, this is a very strongly resonating piece that is easy to relate to as an artist and creator, and is thoughtfully inspiring!
